AU History: Being native to Citadel, the vast, seemingly endless plains and airy, wide-open city give one a great sense of freedom.
Or so it does for everyone else. In Wakana's case, she never felt very free. Within her tribe, she was constantly looked at, whether they pitied her or simply found her to be an oddity. Because, unlike the usual roles their culture calls 'normal', her mother willingly, constantly, acts submissive to her father. No one else will allow the man any position of responsibility or power, certainly, but within their home? That's a different story, and it's known well.
For the child of such a strange couple, she receives plenty of looks, even if she's never done anything odd herself. That, in itself, is pressure on her; the realization of constantly being watched, likely ridiculed in private... her home life wasn't a reprieve from such, as it only served as an unavoidable reminder of how different her family is from the norm.
Unable to stand the looks, she rarely attended the usual training & practice that girls would go through. It's tiresome, she gets dirty, and she still gets watched during it. That didn't help her situation, of course, as it just showed how she differed from her peers... but she really couldn't stand it.
In the search for any sense of freedom, of choosing something for herself, and escaping the gazes of people who judge or pity her, she began to regularly sneak out of the camp. Being out in the open properly, all alone, was relieving in a way she knew she couldn't experience in any other situation. Reveling in this feeling of freedom, she frolicked on light feet, skipping and spinning around playfully, having a better mood than she's had in years.
It was then that she awakened as a Child of the Howling Gale: her light feet became lighter still, aiding her movements with both increased agility and the control over wind. With that, she could literally 'skate' over the plains, never touching the ground as she danced. She danced for no one else but herself, for the sake of feeling free like she can't while around other people. She never told anyone about that power of hers, nor her growing skill at dancing; while she figures her control over wind could be used offensively, giving her an edge at becoming a Valkyrie, she had no interest in following that path. She doubted her parents would be all that pleased with her openly rejecting becoming a warrior, too, so she kept her dancing passtime to herself.
After the events that resulted in the Citadel and Union becoming allies, Wakana knew she found her chance to well and truly escape these looks. She spoke with her parents, used all her pent-up frustration as fuel to be stubborn and unyielding... and managed to get them to let her leave, to go to Union for 'further warrior training'.
Not that she honestly intends to keep that promise... but what they don't know won't hurt them, right?
Once in Union, she stumbles across the entertainment area of town early on, becoming aware of how she might use her skills in a way she would enjoy.
Canon Personality: On the outside, Wakana appears to be an unflappable, whimsical 'stray cat'. Nothing bothers her, and nothing is important to her, either.
It's a complete lie, a disguise to protect herself. Underneath it all, she is very much a considerate, kind girl, who deeply treasures her friends and family. Even when her family comes with such problems, even when her best friend becomes a fearsome presence that holds her back from really trying anything seriously...
Because of her parents moving often, she never made any close friends. She didn't have any social hobbies, either, until she met Ann, who encouraged her into trying Prism Shows. The later events in that period of her childhood, the perceived betrayal and how long Wakana held that grudge, shows that she isn't very forgiving. When she started all that trouble with Ann over the rights to a particular song, even if she claimed to just want some amusement, it was really because she recognized Ann still and wanted to bother her.
On the other hand, she can be extremely kind, even when there's no benefit for herself. This is shown by how she went out of her way to help Bell avoid getting in trouble with her parents over a low test score--before they were even friends! Of course, that began their friendship, but still.
At home, she is subdued, agrees with everything and never steps out of line. She surely learned that behavior from her mother, who does the same. At school, among her friends/teammates at Edel Rose, she is playful and catty(in more than one way), providing a good balance between the serious, hardworking Bell and the timid pushover Otoha.
Even though she has skill with performing, she always holds back, never takes chances. The fear of failure is a heavy pressure, given that the school is extremely harsh and unforgiving, easily expelling students that drop too far in their scores. Furthermore, she has always been simply following Bell, giving the girl a friend and teammate to perform Prism Shows with--to the point that she begged for her father to cancel a work-related move so that she wouldn't leave Bell alone, when they were younger. By the time the show starts, while they are certainly still friends, their relationship has gotten more strained. Knowing what kind of issues Bell deals with at home, Wakana's reluctance in trying to step out of the box and take chances is likely also out of fear of possibly performing better than Bell.
Even though, yes, after both characters get over their respective issues, Bell still outclasses Wakana by a lot, the early episodes have enough hints to make this possible to assume. (Wakana daring to claim at succeeding to make 3 consecutive jumps before Bell, and then wimping out, not taking that chance, after seeing Bell's face for just one moment. When Kazuki helps her get over that, her imagination shows rose vines grabbing her legs, when roses are representative of Bell...)
AU Deviation: The biggest difference in Wakana's background and development is that this AU version has no friends prior to coming to Union. Without Ann to introduce her into Prism Shows, nor Bell to be a close, important friend, Wakana is, by the time she comes to Union, still very much a lone 'stray cat'.
Also, unlike canon, the problems with Wakana's parents hasn't reached a conclusion or solution. Since she opted for escaping rather than continuing to endure it, this may never reach a similar result to canon.

A more minor adjustment I've made is that while she never met Ann(I doubt I'll ever have castmates), she did briefly meet Kazuki when they were children. However, by this time, that memory and childhood first crush are faded and distant. She can't even remember his name clearly...
Canon Abilities: On her own, Wakana is fairly plain. She may have a great sense of balance innately, since from an early age she showed promise when it came to Prism Shows. That kept her in her position on the highest ranked team in the Edel Rose school, but she is still outclassed by her friend and teammate, Bell.
She also likes to dabble in fortune telling, if only as a hobby. It wasn't shown enough for it to be certain if she had any actual skill at it, though.
Her skill at somehow stashing lollipops in her hairbuns could be considered an ability... (joking!)
It's not until she gained a 'pairfriend', a strange little penguin-like creature, that she had anything 'magical' in terms of ability. With hers, who she named Ethni, she could perform a 'Prism Live' during a Prism Show. Ethni turns into a pair of small mallets, with which Wakana can mix up her performance by the addition of playing (magical!) xylophones as she sung and skated/danced.
Enlightened Abilities: I'd say she's Grass/Flying and a Child of the Howling Gale.
Grass because many of her "prism jumps" involve flowers, plants, and fruit. Flying because a later canon power upgrade gives (all the main characters) wings(that only appear when doing consecutive prism jumps #4 and beyond), and furthermore Wakana has often spoke of the wind in relation to herself. That's also my reasoning behind picking Child of the Howling Gale.

The first Enlightened skill she learned, something more than the relatively useless application of lifting herself off the ground slightly, was a defensive blast of wind that only blew obstacles and objects around, possibly also making it harder for an aggressor to move temporarily. (Defog)
At first, her Enlightened abilities won't be evident physically, only manifesting as a simple control over air. Just enough for her to 'skate', the wind lifting her slightly off the ground. With more practice(and levels), she can perform more skillfully, using that manipulation over the wind to do entertaining tricks and such.
Her second form will show her Grass typing, as some small flowers will begin to sprout from her hair, along with some small leaves forming like bracelets around her wrists. She will also have a constant, faint yet pleasant fruity scent.
In her third and final evolution, both her Grass and Flying typing will be obvious, because she'll have sizable wings... in the form of leaves, resembling the Pokemon Tropius. The fruity scent will be stronger, the flowers in her hair larger.
Starter Pokémon: Shinx, male, nicknamed Kazu

Given that kind of beginning, it's not surprising that with some practice, she figured out how to use it more offensively. (Gust)
It takes her more time to wake her other elemental typing, however. Eventually, she makes a breakthrough, and she surprises herself by summoning a few leaves that move as if with a mind of their own. (Magical Leaf)
With more experience using her wind manipulation, she manages to figure out how to apply such to boost the speed of not just herself, but any allies she may have. (Tailwind)
Thinking of how to mix her types in a single move, Wakana attempts summoning (normal) leaves while using her wind control to direct them. For some reason, she is compelled to dance while she does so, and ends up very dizzy and confused afterwards... (Petal Dance)
Once she understands her connection to Grass typing better, and with much, much more battle experience under her belt, she learns how to make her immediate surroundings sprout and bloom with plant life, providing a healing effect to anyone present. (Grassy Terrain)

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
"Pokemon? Well, we're not as close to them back in Citadel, but... the way they're all over the place here in Union isn't so bad. I don't think I need to be all buddy with one myself, though."
-What do you feel your role in Union is?
"...I don't want to be in a 'role'.
Why? Those are too restrictive, you know~?"
She had enough of looks, of pressure, and to add expectations to it? No.
-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
"Respect? Nyahaha, I don't know about that. Maybe they stick around for the sweets."
Even if she gives off a lazy, careless persona with most people, she does treat her few Pokemon allies well. It's not just the treats.
Even if she gives off a lazy, careless persona with most people, she does treat her few Pokemon allies well. It's not just the treats.
-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
"Most important...?
Isn't the obvious answer the guards? They keep an eye out for danger, and prevent anything from reaching these tall walls, right?"
Wakana isn't honest by nature, usually... she would pick any entertainment-related occupation before that.
-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
"If I have to... I guess they should be a bit cute. Or, maybe, easy to tease? Yeah, I'd like that, nya~
Then again, if they were easy to tease, they must be cute..."
-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
"Like how I got from Citadel to here, I'd rely on being fast... Battles are so annoying, I'd rather avoid them."
